About Old Scottish Customs: Local and General

Every country has history and heritage, and a large part of that heritage is in the customs and traditions of the past. Old Scottish Customs was originally published in 1885 by E.J. Guthrie, the culmination of fifteen years of study and travels during which she collected stories and reports of old Scottish customs and traditions that either had fallen out of fashion or were becoming obsolete.

This modern reproduction presents the original material from 1885, offering a fascinating insight into the heritage of Scotland. It touches on religion, family life, birth and death, weddings and festivities, and all other aspects of life. The book belongs on the shelf of anyone with an interest in the history of the Scottish people and how they would have lived their lives.

In the fast-paced modern world, where everything is available quickly and at the push of a button, where we can travel large distances very quickly and where information can travel even larger distances even more swiftly, it is worth reflecting on why some of these old customs developed, why they manifested the way they did, and why there was a need for such customs in local communities.
